S-CUBE WINS Above & Beyond Award


 

S-CUBE client, Books-A-Million nominates S-CUBE for this prestigious Shop! Award. Books-A-Million, Inc., also known as BAM!, owns and operates the second largest bookstore chain in the United States. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama BAM operates more than 260 stores in 32 states and in the District of Columbia.

Books-A-Million stores offer an expansive selection of books, magazines, collectible supplies, toys, technology and gift departments, as well as special category shops within the store. Stores typically average around 30,000 square feet in size. 2nd and Charles is their resale platform and offers similar products.

S-CUBE began partnering with BAM by providing a single hat rack. Proving to be a competent and engaged vendor-partner BAM awarded S-CUBE more and more fixture items over the years. Now, 5 years later S-CUBE is proud to be providing 120 different sku’s and a complete suite of services that include design, value-engineering, manufacturing, logistics coordination and inventory management.

Logistics requirements mandated that each truck arrive on-time and in the correct order to facilitate unloading and staging of the stores in a predetermined order. Fixtures fill 10-12 trucks per each location. A special color-coded identification system was developed to facilitate off-load by store zone and speed the store set-up.

S-CUBE efforts delivered cost savings from BAM’s former fixure package of almost one-half! Aggressive V/E reduced these production costs & minimized in-transit damage, reduced labor costs at store set, reduced store opening time & administrative costs. As a result, S-CUBE now provides 95% of the complete package.

BAM nominated S-CUBE for the Shop! Merriman Above & Beyond Award. Named in honor of former association executive director Klein Merriman. The award recognizes Shop! members that deliver exceptional service to retail or brand customers.

S-CUBE was named winner of this prestigious award during the Shop! Awards Celebration on March 28th during GlobalShop.

S-CUBE Helps PAVE the way at GlobalShop Debut


 

GlobalShop is the nation’s largest retail design industry trade show and is only annual event that combines store design, visual merchandising, retail technology, and shopper marketing leaders under one roof. This year GlobalShop was March 27-29 at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL.

S-CUBE’s debut at GlobalShop this year was a collaborative partnership between PAVE, The Body Shop and Endicott College.

PAVE, stands for the Planning & Visual Education. The association’s mission is to connect students, educators, and professionals who support the retail industry in a vibrant, meaningful, and mentoring format.

The PAVE Student Design Challenge is a project that brings together some of the best student design talent with store fixture manufacturers and their retail brand clients. The retail client presents a real life design problem to the students who, in turn, must address the problem. The best design was then selected to be built and displayed within the PAVE pavilion at GlobalShop.

The S-CUBE PAVE challenge was presented by The Body Shop to thirteen student teams from Endicott College. The students challenge was to reimagine the cash wrap area of the store in order to increase impulse purchases, and to create a more visually stimulating branded statement.

The students worked through concept phases to final designs and presented their options for consideration. All student solutions were well-thought out and viable options, attesting to the talent of the Students at Endicott. One design was selected in December by The Body Shop.

S-CUBE showcased the winning project during their GlobalShop debut. Engineering and custom fabrication for the impulse displays, acrylic accessories and backwall visuals were produced in our China facility.

Fixtures and finishes included, high-gloss lacquer backwrap, impulse fixtures constructed of wood laminate and powder-coated metal. Acrylic displayers were sized to exact product dimensions. The backwall wood focal area matched the fixture finish. The faux brick and sourcing map were printed directly onto walls in Chicago. Additionally the prototype featured all the drawer storage required.

Artificial Intelligence: What Is It & Why Should We Care?


 

Artificial intelligence (AI) makes it possible for machines to learn from experience, adjust to new input and perform human-like tasks. Most AI examples that you hear about today – from chess-playing computers to self-driving cars – rely heavily on deep learning and natural language processing. Using these technologies, computers can be trained to accomplish specific tasks by processing large amounts of data and recognizing patterns in the data.

Artificial Intelligence History

The term artificial intelligence was coined in 1956, and has become more popular today thanks to increased data volumes, advanced algorithms, and improvements in computing power and storage.

Early AI research in the 1950s explored topics like problem solving and symbolic methods. In the 1960s, the US Department of Defense began training computers to mimic basic human reasoning. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) completed street mapping projects in the 1970s. and then produced intelligent personal assistants in 2003, long before Siri, Alexa or Cortana were household names.

This early work paved the way for the automation and formal reasoning that we see in computers today, including decision support systems and smart search systems that can be designed to complement and augment human abilities.

How Artificial Intelligence Works

AI works by combining large amounts of data with fast, iterative processing and intelligent algorithms, allowing the software to learn automatically from patterns or features in the data. AI is a broad field of study that includes many theories, methods and technologies.

  • AI automates repetitive learning and discovery through data.
  • AI adds intelligence to existing products.
  • AI adapts through progressive learning algorithms to let the data do the programming.
  • AI analyzes more and deeper data.
  • AI achieves incredible accuracy though deep neural networks – which was previously impossible. For example, your interactions with Alexa, Google Search and Google Photos are all based on deep learning – and they keep getting more accurate the more we use them.
  • AI gets the most out of data techniques, the best data will win.

AI has evolved to provide many specific benefits in every industry.

Retail Application

AI provides virtual shopping capabilities that offer personalized recommendations and discuss purchase options with the consumer. Stock management and site layout technologies will also be improved with AI.

AI provides retailers with more data about inventory and how customers behave in stores, and it is becoming less expensive and easier to use AI to turn data into “simple, actionable insights for your staff.” Instead of seeing AI as a threat that eliminates jobs through automation, retailers should embrace the technology as a tool that can solve their business problems, retail AI experts said.
